Afternoon art is MARVELOUS because all the kids can do whatever they want. You can use clay, use the how-to-draw books, and create your own masterpiece. It’s different than regular art, because it’s way more fun, and you probably progress more. You can learn more from the other kids because they can teach you the things they are learning. That doesn’t happen in regular art. -Zoe K., 3rd grade

Wayne Thiebaud (pronounced Tee-Bow) was born in 1920 and became part of the pop art movement.

While in the Navy, Thiebaud spent time in New York City and began painting pastries and other American foods -- pies, ice cream cones, and hot dogs. He used very thick paint in exaggerated colorsWhen he painted cakes, he applied the paint like a baker would spread frosting. His artwork looks good enough to eat.

Thiebaud paints from his imagination and from long-ago memories of bakeries and diners. He said, “Cakes, they are glorious, they are like toys.”
