Yearbook Artwork

By Ava J, 5E

“Self portraits rock!” my class said, after Ms. Palefsky announced that the next unit in art class was making our own self-portraits for the yearbook. First, Ms. Palefsky showed us famous artists that made outstanding self-portraits, those artists were… Frida Kahlo, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Chagall.  After that it was time to get started. Ms. Palefsky did step-by-step, and taught us "eyes by the ears" and many more fantastic drawing tricks. Within the next few classes our self-portraits had gotten better and better, looking more realistic every time. By now Ms. Palefsky had put up advanced eyes, nose and mouth photos to give us options for which ones we wanted to choose. This unit was taking a very long time, but soon enough my whole class was done with all the steps, they were colored and everything! Ms. Palefsky was sooo impressed with how our faces were in proportion, it was amazing! Although it was a long unit the result was great. I had an awesome time and so did the rest of fifth grade. Self-portraits are an amazing art project!

Truffulas

By Carmelina, 5H
We are the Purchase kids and we Speak for
the Trees!

Theodor Geisel, otherwise known as the magnificent Dr. Suess, was born on March 2, 1904. His funny ideas and his inspiring words helped Ms. Palefsky think of making the softest trees in Dr. Suess' mind. We used a few materials that are:
- Pipe cleaners from Ms. Hinteremeister
- Cotton from Ms. Gonzales
- Modelling clay
- paint or chalk or marker
- feathers
We either used paint, chalk pastels, or marker on the cotton to make the vibrant colors of the truffula tree's fluff. We used the clay to make a base so our trees could stand. Then we used the pipe cleaners as the body of the trees. After we stuck the fluff on the pipe cleaners and the pipe cleaners in the clay base, our trees were born! We now we keep the truffulas as a reminder of Dr. Suess, the famous story of The Lorax, and the words that story left: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

Steamy Cocoa

By Avery, 1st grade

Hi my name is Avery. In art class I made a picture of a mug of hot cocoa. It was so so so much fun. First, I decorated the mug with markers and pastels. I drew hearts and peace signs on mine. Then I glued it on a piece of paper. Then I used some chalk to make a table that it was on top of. Finally, we glued some cotton to make it look like it was sooooo hot that steam was rising from out of the mug. I decorated the paper to look like there were two pictures hanging on the wall.
